Med återupplivandet av rymdoperan i form av Elite: Dangerous och Star Citizen har vi redan en hel delTestade flightsticks i HOTAS-format. Hands on Stick and Throttle är helt enkelt det bästa sättet att uppleva dessa spel. Mad Catz och Saitek eller Thrustmaster utgör huvuddelen av sortimentet i det här landet och tills amerikanerna från CH Products, som är högt värderade inom simuleringsscenen, hittar en bredare spridning i det här landet kommer det förmodligen att förbli så.
Vi fick vänta lite på mönstret - X52 är från 2005, dess premiumbror X52 Pro från 2007 - men efter omfattande utforskning av Vintergatan och luftstrider i War Thunder måste jag intyga: väntan var värt det. Det är inte förvånande att båda modellerna fortfarande säljs och är mycket populära. Jag skulle faktiskt till och med kalla Pro-versionen för Saiteks toppmodell och min nya allround feel-good-stick. Den nyare och dyrare X55 Rhino slår bara de erfarna åkarna vad gäller utrustning och några enskilda grenar.
Saitek X52
Visserligen är han inte snygg. Medan silvret är borstad metall vid basen av stick- och tryckenheten, är det bara plast runt de centrala kontrollerna med ett lite billigt metalliskt utseende. De blå knapparna och de googlyögda knopparna med de enorma gummiknopparna skriker ut det gamla tillverkningsåret. Men till ett pris på endast 120 euro är det väldigt svårt att komma över när man tittar på funktionaliteten. Väl i handen känns stickan varken sämre eller mindre exakt än förra årets X55, som kostar dubbelt så mycket. Faktum är att jag gillar X52:an ännu bättre. Låt oss börja från början:
Stickan på X55 designades väldigt tungt. Saitek ville placera hela tre åttavägshattar och en brandknapp på tumytan, vilket gjorde att pannan på joysticken inte var för lätt att nå med normalstora händer utan att greppa stavens bas lite lösa. X52 har bara två av dessa mini-joysticks, men den får fyra knappar - en under en skyddande lucka, roligt! - och en lägesvalsknapp. Och alla är otroligt bekväma och lätta att använda. I ett och ett halvt år var X55 min favoritklubba. Det är först nu, med X52 i händerna, som jag inser hur ofta jag har varit lite trång i striderna. Nu flyger min tumme bara över toppen av pinnen.
Avtryckaren under pekfingret på X52 har till och med två steg, två knappar i ett så att säga, vilket borde glädja simuleringsproffs. X55 Rhino tänkte inte längre på det, även om den erbjuder en andra knapp för lillfingret. Omvänt säkerställde detta i sin tur att handstödet på Rhino inte var justerbart i höjdled. Detta är fortfarande möjligt med X52 och säkerställer därmed maximal anpassningsförmåga till olika handstorlekar. Du kan till och med låsa Z-axelns vridning med en bult. Stickklassikern visar här att den är långt ifrån gammaldags. Tvärtom känns det till och med lite mer avancerat. Det är en ära med den här enheten att alla knappar och hattar känns ganska bra, med undantag för de tre vippknapparna på basen, som är lite för vingliga och borde triggas tydligare.
Tyvärr finns det bara en åttavägshatt på tryckenheten, vars lätthet att röra sig kan justeras med en vridreglage, och den ligger under pekfingret. Här har X55 Rhino helt klart kanten. De två små tumhatsarna på gasreglaget är verkligen guld värda. Å andra sidan fungerar faktiskt X52:ans musknapp. Jag har fortfarande inte fått X55 att fungera. Elite: Dangerous hanterar avsaknaden av hattpinnar i sin X52-förinställning väldigt skickligt, till exempel dubblar den nedre tummössan på joysticken när du håller ner pinky-knappen. Enkelt och smart. Jag gillar själva boosten lite bättre på X55. På X52 finns det ett motstånd vid 75 procent av dragkraften (och 25 procent vid retardation) vilket, på mitt träbord där de medföljande sugkopparna inte håller, får mig att flytta på gasreglaget lite - om jag inte är det försiktig.
Men annars är allt i perfekt ordning på vänster sida också: det steglösa reglaget gör sitt jobb bra, och det finns till och med ett mushjul installerat på baksidan (zoomar in Star Citizen! Ja!), som du till och med kan klicka på. Det finns också det faktum att stickan först måste kopplas till drivenheten med en PS/2-kabel innan den kan anslutas till datorn via USB. Det finns i alla fall en kabel på skrivbordet framför dig. Men det är en liten sak som inte spelar någon roll.
X52:ans höga ålder märks bara på "multifunktionsdisplayen", som numera i basen av push-enheten fortfarande i bästa fall fungerar som restbelysning i spelrummet. Visst, ett stoppur är inbyggt, vilket borde glädja MS Flight Simulator-entusiaster. Nuförtiden föredrar folk dock att ha sin spelinformation på skärmen. Programvaran är också uppenbarligen från Windows XP:s dagar - installationen måste göras från disk, Windows hittade inga drivrutiner automatiskt - vilket gör den skrymmande och lite ful. Men det förändrar inte det faktum att när det kommer till funktionalitet så hanterar den makron och enskilda omtilldelningar ganska potent.
Allt som allt, och för hälften av vad X55 kostar, en hel del. Naturligtvis är X52 inte lika snygg och känns inte riktigt lika premium som X55 (men inte hattarna och knapparna!). Och den nyare modellen förblir naturligtvis riktmärket när det gäller kontrollflexibilitet, med sina oändliga hattspinnar, delade gasreglage och en otrolig mängd vippomkopplare. Men X52 packar in ett genomtänkt och mycket ergonomiskt HOTAS-system i ett mycket mindre utrymme, som dessutom är perfekt anpassat för modernt flyg.

Saitek X52 Pro
Pro-varianten av X52, som är två år yngre, är en liten triumf i flera avseenden. Den kombinerar den fantastiska ergonomin från sin föregångare med ett utförande och värde som känns som en mycket dyrare enhet. Detaljpriset är för närvarande bara 159 euro. Drygt 80 euro lägre än för X55 Rhino, som hittills har varit vår favoritklubba. Till skillnad från den vanliga X52 använder Pro:n många metalldelar: Förutom insatserna på basen, denna gång i antracit, lägesratten, lillfingerknappen, avtryckaren och den nedre hattpinnen samt vippbrytare och ringen som fjädrarna vilar på, alla mattpolerade höjdpunkter. Det och den stilrena gummerade svarta gör mycket för den visuella regummeringen och handkänslan hos HOTAS-systemet.
Men - och det är viktigt - det säkerställer också bättre funktionalitet. Särskilt metallringen, som nu får kontakt med basskarven, ökar komforten. Där andra stickor - inklusive X55 och X52 - förlitar sig på plast, skapar varje stickrörelse ett litet skrapande som du inte bara hör utan också känner när du styr. X52 Pro däremot sprider en jämnhet som är riktigt irriterande till en början om du är van vid det vanliga tysta gnuggandet och enstaka plast- eller fjäderknasande från andra stickor. Med undantag för Thrustmaster Warthog som ligger i en helt annan prisklass har det varit så med alla pinnar hittills. Man var van vid det. Med X52 är det historia nu och jag förväntar mig att det kommer att störa mig med alla andra modeller jag stöter på från och med nu.
Det är fullt möjligt att det också beror på tvåfjädrarsystemet som Saitek använder i Pro:n för att centrera pinnen. Jag har ofta läst på nätet att X52 är för lätt för vissa spelare. Det är inte det tuffaste av ben och, till skillnad från X55, kommer det inte med olika fjädrar som kan bytas ut så att du kan komma närmare dina egna personliga preferenser. Men jag kände mig riktigt hemma på Pro. Här känner jag mer för att hålla i en hydraulisk joystick än att böja ett par fjädrar. Jag kan inte riktigt säga nog hur mycket smidigare den är än de flesta andra enheter av den här typen, även om du kan höra en fjäder som hoppar över här och där, speciellt med Z-Twist.
Annat än det är detta faktiskt samma pinne som sin föregångare när det gäller funktioner. Belysningen är snyggare, knappen under "Safe"-kåpan blir röd när du fäller upp locket och pinnarna tenderar att kännas ännu mer hållbara än på X52. Multifunktionsdisplayen är programmerbar här, men förutom några förinställda radiofunktioner som vissa War Thunder-spelare har moddat till en profil, har jag inte hittat något som skulle göra denna extra display riktigt tilltalande för mig. Definitivt en relik från en annan tid.
Detta gäller dock inte helhetsintrycket av denna pinne: Om jag fick välja skulle det vara den som skulle stå på mitt skrivbord. Antingen det eller så betalar du nästan 500 euro för ett vårtsvin inklusive pedaler. Skillnaden mot den normala X52 ligger främst i utseendet och materialen, men tillsammans med den smidigare stickan motiverar den nyare modellen inte bara "Pro" i namnet, utan även tilläggsavgiften på 40 euro. Det här kanske inte är det mest kompletta HOTAS-systemet på marknaden - som förblir i konsumentklassen för X55 Rhino. Men det är en av de snyggaste och förmodligen den bästa som gjorts till den här prisklassen.
