Hello and welcome to today's Arsenal live blog on Thursday, January 5.
The dust has settled on the Gunners' goalless draw with Newcastle from Tuesday night and attention will now be turning to this evening's game involving their title rivals Manchester City who face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
As for Mikel Arteta's side, preparations will now be beginning for the third round FA Cup clash against Oxford that is set to take place at the Kassam Stadium on Monday.
The latest transfer news from north London, of course involves Mykhaylo Mudryk, who will be celebrating his 22nd birthday today, with Arsenal tabling another offer to Shakhtar that looks set to be rejected. Meanwhile, Chelsea are plotting a transfer hijack for the winger with Dario Srna set to be at the Blues' clash with Man City.
Elsewhere, a fresh update on the January status of Youri Tielemans, as well as the latest news surrounding Adrien Rabiot and Joao Felix. With that said, keep the blog on lock as football.london will be bringing you the latest on any Arsenal news and transfers rumours.
Former defender return
Transfer expert Florian Plettenberg reports that former Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos wants to leave VfB Stuttgart, less than one-year after signing for the Bundesliga club.
The Greek centre-back could be set for a return to England too, with Premier League sides eyeing a move.
Arsenal have been handed some title advice by Jamie Carragher after their draw against Newcastle in midweek.
Paul Merson is unsure that Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma could be the alternative target for Mykhaylo Mudryk at Arsenal in the coming weeks.
Merson told the Express: "Arsenal need to set Shakhtar Donetsk a deadline with Mykhaylo Mudryk. They've offered £62m and it should now be 'take it or leave it' otherwise the January transfer window will soon be over. I'm not sure about Mitoma. You're playing for Brighton at the moment, it's nice. They were beaten 4-2 at home to Arsenal and nobody said a word.
"It's a different game altogether. Arsenal drew at home to Newcastle and it's the end of the world for them at the moment. I don't see how Mitoma would cope with it, it's a big step up. I know Mudryk is coming from Ukraine but he's been playing Champions League football and ripping it up."
Arsenal are "definitely" in the race to sign West Ham midfielder Declan Rice in the summer, according to reports.
The England international is reaching the final year of his contract with the Hammers and could be available at a cut-price in the summer.
Shakhtar chiefs spotted
Shakhtar Donetsk chief Darijo Srna has been spotted in London ahead of potential talks with Arsenal and Chelsea over a move for winger Mykhaylo Mudryk.
Alonside him was former Gunners and Blues players Willian and Eduardo.
Arsenal are eyeing a potential move for Mexico international star Hrving Lozano, according to Italian publication La Repubblica.
The forward is out of contract in 2024 and an exit from Napoli could come as low as £25million in the January transfer market.
Former Arsenal midfielder William Gallas has claimed that the Gunners don't need Mykhaylo Mudryk as Eddie Nketiah will be just fine.
He told GentingCasino: "I don’t know if Arsenal need Mykhailo Mudryk for the second part of the season. Maybe they do. As I said, the season is very long. But at the same time, Arteta has his squad already, players on the bench, players who can come on and play in that position like Nketiah.
"It's really difficult to get an answer to that question because I'm not there and I don't know what is going down. So if they sign him, they know why. I’m sure Mudryk is a great player who can help the squad. So if that player can help them to win the title then they should buy him."
Arsenal transfer target Mykhaylo Mudryk took to social media to drop what could be interpreted as a 'come and get me' plea to the Gunners as the transfer saga involving him continues to heat up. The 21-year-old is said to be keen on a move to England and has made his feelings clear on his future countless times.

Arsenal Women have confirmed the exit of midfield icon Jordan Nobbs to Aston Villa during the January transfer window.
Since joining in 2010, Nobbs managed over 270 competitive appearances for the club, winning 12 trophies in that time.
Penning a statement on the official website, she said: "I’ve had the time of my life here, and if you’re reading this, you’ve played a massive part in making this journey so special to me. I will always love this football club. Thank you, Arsenal, for everything."
Shakhtar Donetsk director Carlo Nicolini told Calciomercato: “Napoli have asked about Mudryk.
"His price? Look at Antony’s fee. The problem with Italian clubs is that they don’t take the chance when they should. Look at Enzo, Milan could have signed him and now he’s worth 100m”
James Maddison hint
Brendan Rodgers may have dropped a hint over a possible exit for James Maddison at Leicester City in the transfer window.
The England international has been previously linked with the Gunners and when asked about possible exits this January, the manager said: "It’s getting more difficult. The financial resources, not just in the top six, makes it really difficult. Clubs have multiple injections of finances. We have one owner and one family. Each year it gets tougher. It doesn’t soften our ambition to be super competitive.”
Before adding on the window: "There are possibilities [for players to leave]. There are players who may look to play, but teams have to want those players. We have some young players who may need loans. We’ll see.”
Arsenal are set to have a direct meeting with Shakhtar Donetsk over a move for winger Mykhaylo Mudryk.
Meanwhile, later tonight, their rivals Chelsea are also expected to meet with directors to discuss the possibility of a switch.
Gallas questions Mudryk move
William Gallas has questioned Arsenal's pursuit of Mykhaylo Mudryk.
"I don’t know if Arsenal need Mykhailo Mudryk for the second part of the season. Maybe they do," Gallas told Getting Casino.
"As I said, the season is very long. But at the same time, Arteta has his squad already, players on the bench, players who can come on and play in that position like Nketiah.
"It’s really difficult to get an answer to that question because I’m not there and I don’t know what is going down. So if they sign him, they know why.
"I’m sure Mudryk is a great player who can help the squad. So if that player can help them to win the title then they should buy him."
Transfer guru David Ornstein has spoken about Arsenal's interest in Mykhaylo Mudryk.
“They’ll [Arsenal] look to do some business in the January market", Ornstein said to Sky Sports.
"They want a couple of players.
“It’s been quite well-documented now, with Mudryk, Chelsea are monitoring the situation. I don’t know if they’ll beat Arsenal to him, let’s wait and see. Mudryk has been quite clear in stating his desire to join."
Arsenal hero Tony Adams has compared Bukayo Saka to PSG star Lionel Messi.
Speaking to the Seaman Says podcast, Adams said: “I think player of the season is Saka. The kid is just phenomenal.
"I had a bit of a go at Gareth [Southgate] during the World Cup for taking him off. He’s every bit as good as Messi, Messi is obviously at the end of his career."
Former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein has claimed that football matches should be reduced to 60 minutes.
Speaking to talkSport, Dein said: “I’m talking to all the FIFA officials, they know where it is at, I have made presentations to them.
“Slowly, but surely, we will get it on the agenda. The next thing I would like is to see it trialled in a junior tournament and see how it goes.
Chris Sutton has heavily criticised Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta for his touchline antics during Tuesday evening's 0-0 draw with Newcastle United.
“There is a fine line between being passionate and a clown and Mikel Arteta was the latter on Tuesday,” Sutton told the Daily Mail.
“It can be entertaining but it can be embarrassing, too."
Both Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka have been nominated for Premier League player of the month!
Transfer expert Simon Phillips has claimed that sources close to Shakhtar star Mykhaylo Mudryk expect the player to join Arsenal over Chelsea.
Speaking about Mudryk to GiveMeSport, Phillips said: “Chelsea hold an interest, but the feeling from sources is he has his heart set on joining Arsenal, and we expect that to happen.
“It feels a bit like Chelsea could be being used to get Arsenal to pay up for him, but that’s my opinion.”
Declan Rice pursuit
Arsenal could make a move for West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice this summer, according to transfer guru Ben Jacobs.
Rice has been heavily linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United in the past, although the Gunners could certainly provide stiff competition considering their impressive progress under head coach Mikel Arteta.
Ian Wright has defended Mikel Arteta's touchline actions after the Arsenal boss came under criticism from the likes of Alan Shearer following the Gunners' 0-0 draw against Newcastle United on Tuesday evening.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Wright said: “The way Mikel Arteta acts, it’s like he always acts on the line.
"It’s going to be very difficult for me to say something about my own manager because sometimes it looks like ‘yeah, he is managing every aspect of the game’.
"But that’s just how he is. I am quite used to seeing it now. It doesn’t bother me. Hopefully, that won’t work against him simply because the team are doing so well – you don’t want to get into that ‘scandalous’ penalty decision and stuff.”
Transfer guru Dean Jones has reported that Arsenal are unlikely to sign Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic during the January transfer window.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones said: “I’m still told the chances of getting Vlahovic in this window are slim to no chance
“But at the end of the season, if Arsenal maintain this kind of form they will be capable of pretty much anything in the transfer market.
“Juventus are very unsettled at the moment and I think there is a very real chance top talent will be available from them in the summer.”
Arsenal's pursuit of Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk has been well-documented in recent times, with the player undoubtedly keen to secure a move during the January transfer window.
Now, the talented winger has 'liked' a picture on Instagram that makes his desire to leave the Ukrainian club extremely clear.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona frontman Ferran Torres is keen to remain at the Catalan club and is unlikely to leave during the January transfer window.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Torres in recent times.
Arsenal's interest in Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans has cooled football.london understands.
Some reports have claimed that the north London outfit could make a move for the Belgian during the January transfer window, but that seems unlikely as things stand.
Chelsea plot Mudryk hijack
Chelsea are reportedly considering a move to hijack Arsenal's move for Mykhaylo Mudryk. The Shakhtar Donetsk winger looks almost certain to secure a move to the Premier League in January after becoming a priority signing by Mikel Arteta's side this month.
However, Todd Boehly could swoop in and sign Mudryk from right under the noses of the Gunners with the latest update revealing a key meeting is set to take place between Shakhtar and Chelsea.

Rabiot contract U-turn
Juventus have sent their latest contract proposal to Adrien Rabiot in the hopes of fending off interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United. The midfielder's contract in Italy expires in the summer of 2023 and Juve are pushing to keep him at the club beyond the expiration of his current deal.
Both London clubs and United are eyeing new midfield options, with Chelsea particularly in need of a rebuild in the position, while Arsenal are on the lookout for more depth in the centre of the park, however they may need to look elsewhere if Rabiot chooses to accept Juve's latest proposal.
